The Teach for Romania model was initially developed in 1990 by Teach for America in the United States. It aims to attract top graduates who would not have normally considered the teaching profession among their future professional options. The model works successfully in 50 countries across 5 continents, where it is implemented by the partner organizations of the Teach for All network.
Teach for Romania rigorously recruits the most gifted and motivated young Romanians, helping them understand the impact they can have by choosing to enter the teaching profession.
Candidates are assessed according to their academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activities, demonstrated leadership potential, motivation and dedication to teaching, perseverance, critical thinking, among many other competencies
Prior to their placement in schools, Teach for Romania teachers take part in an intensive pedagogy and leadership training called the Leadership Summer Academy. The program takes place over a period of 6 weeks and ensures that teachers acquire the abilities necessary to become successful teachers.
During their two year placements, teachers are constantly supported and advised by a team of tutors and benefit from continuous professional development. Teacher performance in the classroom is assessed by a performance evaluation system.
Teachers are employed for two years on a full-time basis in disadvantaged schools selected by Teach for Romania. Selected schools have a need for teachers who are passionate about generating a positive transformation in their students’ lives. Teachers will be evaluated based on their students’ progress and on the impact they generate in their community.
At the end of the two years, Teach for Romania teachers can continue teaching in the formal educational system or move into related fields from which they can support and promote the reform of the Romanian educational system (entrepreneurs in education, school administrators, business leaders, etc.) Alumni receive career development support from Teach for Romania as well as from other partner organizations. They also become part of the Teach For All network and can benefit from the synergies offered by belonging to a global education network. Irrespective of the choice they make, the alumni network will keep them involved and connected to further support Teach for Romania’s vision.
